I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you,
that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over,
took bread, and, after he had given thanks,
broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”

Let’s talk about food. 

Perhaps, a part of our nature, our cultural heritages, or just because we live our faith in tangible ways – we love to feed people and to feed them well. We love to carry food into the community through the giving of food. There is our parish food pantry and our food collections.

There is also our food centered fundraising efforts, Polish, food sales, goulash and soup sales. No one approaches these things with a grumpy attitude. Rather we come together to do the work and most importantly we serve with smiling faces.

When we have guests over at home, whether it be family or friends or members of the church family none of us would likely serve corned beef hash from a can with a side of cheese whiz (although I love cheese whiz).  Rather, we pull out the best. We spend the extra. We take the time to present something lovely. We hear people say, they really pulled out all the stops, they went over the top in preparing that food.

Take a moment to reflect on some of those special moments in our lives, the looks on people’s faces, the way they really dug into that food. We could call it joy, pure pleasure, happiness. Following Thanksgiving dinner my father-in-law always tells me: “You can cook for me anytime.”

Thinking of all these things, the food, the experiences, let’s ask: What would we feed Jesus if He was coming over?

One of the best places to start planning is to get an appreciation for what Jesus ate and drank.

When we read through scripture we tend to place a lot of our own experience into the moments. Jesus ate bread and drank wine. Jesus liked figs and grains in the field. We think of the stuff we can get at a local farm or down at the supermarket.

Jesus did not eat like that at all.

First, we must consider what was available. God made promises to Israel about the produce the land would yield. There were seven essential foods, or species, that God promised. These were wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. 

In Deuteronomy 8:7-8 we read: For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey.

Some of these were a regular part of Jesus’ diet, but not all. For ordinary Jews, and especially itinerant preachers like Jesus, their diet was at the bottom of the economic ladder. The foods Jesus ate were produced locally. It was really farm to table for Jesus.

The poor only ate barley bread. Barley was less expensive since it was ground roughly, not fine like wheat flour. We see this at Jesus’ miraculous feeding recorded in John 6:9, “There is a boy here who has five loaves of barley bread and two fish with him.”

Most ordinary people’s diet in Jesus’ time was bread, barley bread, up to seventy percent of daily calories. Bread was essential, important to each person. As such, Jesus’ teaching us to pray included a verse that resonated for everyone because it came from their need: Give us our necessary bread today. (Matthew 6:11)

While there was bee honey in Israel, that was also expensive and unavailable to ordinary people. They ate a honey produced from figs. Grapes produced juice and wine. Olives gave every form of oil from oil for burning in Temple worship (the best), to oil for cooking and healing as in Luke 10:34  “And he came and bound his wounds and poured wine and oil on them and set him on his donkey and he took him to an inn and cared for him,” to the lowliest oil used to light homes. 

Jesus certainly enjoyed fish which was inexpensive and abundant in His seaside headquarters in Capernaum. Even after His resurrection we see Jesus preparing fish at His seaside barbeque: But when they came up to the land they saw burning coals, which had been set, and fish were lying on them, and bread. (John 21:9) As far as other meat protein sources there was likely none. Lamb was super expensive as was cattle. If anything besides fish, proteins were derived from beans and other legumes.

Jesus used food as symbolic objects in His teachings, referencing things from everyday life. In addressing the hypocrisy of the leaders of the time He says: “Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, impostors, for you tithe mint and dill and cummin and you forsake the weighty things of the law: Justice, mercy and faith!” (Matthew 23:23)

We see from all this that Jesus was well versed in Scripture and in food. Both Scripture and food were key to Jesus’ feeding of the disciples.

Finally, we arrive at the ultimate meal, the Last Supper and the gift we celebrate in this Octave. Archeologists suggest that the items on the Last Supper table included a bean stew, lamb, olives, bitter herbs, a fish sauce, unleavened bread from wheat, dates and aromatized wine. The seven species of Israel are there, and most importantly, it is all top-of-the-line stuff – the best.

In having the best prepared for that supper Jesus foreshadows the best food gift of all, His very Body and Blood which is for us.

Jesus understood our need for Him, our need for nourishment, for what is best, for what is simply comprehended and gloriously deep. 

What would we prepare for Jesus? 

The best dinner we can prepare for Jesus is that of our very selves, the giving of our hearts and lives to Jesus in all things and in every way. “For as often as we eat this bread and drink the cup” we place our lives, families, work, courage, trust, and future into His hands. Don’t give Him anything less than what He gave us.

So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.

Last week Jesus sent out His twelve Apostles as disciples for some on-the-job training in every village and town. They were to proclaim repentance for forgiveness of sins as well as the immanence of the Kingdom which was at hand. They had also been empowered to heal.

Today we hear of the Apostles return. They were filled with real joy from all they experienced, and the amazing results realized through the grace of God that accompanied them. They were also exhausted.

To set context, the Apostles were sent out when they were at the southern end of the Sea of Galilee. In today’s account they regather at the northern end of the Sea and then sail across it.

While no specific timeline for the Apostles mission is given, we could posit that it probably lasted about six months.

Now imagine that we are on that mission from Jesus. We have walked the highways and byways of Galilee. We have also covered the thirteen miles from the south to the north of the Sea. We have done this with no visible means of support or supplies, relying completely on the kindness of those we are evangelizing. About two thousand square miles of Galilee, heights from one to four thousand feet. We would be completely exhausted. They were.

We should also remember that Jesus was not sitting still. He traveled on His own to preach, teach, and heal. Now came the moment, rest was ahead.

We know what scripture tells us, but better for us to understand what Jesus and His Apostles were feeling.

Here they are, sailing cross the Sea, ready to rest, pray, refresh themselves. We can imagine the anticipation, the thoughts in their minds, the feelings in their heart – and there they are, huge crowds; large numbers of people spiritually lost and alone and seeking guidance. Sheep without a shepherd.

The fact is, we all face this conundrum. We work hard, volunteer, care for family and friends, run, shop, do chores and as soon as that moment of rest comes – here’s the next thing. The old saying: ‘No rest for the weary’ comes from those experiences.

This is not just a lesson on daily life and perseverance, it is a call to go on and on in our Christian witness and evangelization no matter what. People remain hungry and need us to feed them now. People need us to be like Jesus for them, to see their need and set ourselves aside to bring them to Christ and His salvation. Remember that the sheep will not know where to go unless we shepherd them.

Hearing and moving.

Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.”

Good morning, Church! I am so thankful you have chosen to worship with us this Sunday as we declare: Christ is risen! He is truly risen! Alleluia!

Today we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday as the fourth Sunday of Easter is always known. We encounter the shortest Gospel concerning the Good Shepherd, only four verses. In other years it is either eight or ten verses. Yet in these four verses we clearly see the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd – the Shepherd Who cares for and protects us, the Good Shepherd Who lives up to His promises and speaks to us.

Last week we heard about Jesus’ feeding of His Apostles by the seaside. He also spoke a command to them, and to us, that we are to feed and tend His flock.

Now, we should take a moment to check in. Did we hear what Jesus asked of us concerning tending and feeding? This is important.

Today’s gospel contains a great promise to all followers of the Christ. Jesus says: “My sheep hear my voice!” He does not say we could hear his voice, or we should hear his voice, or we might hear his voice. Rather, Jesus is exceptionally clear that we do hear His voice.

As such, we should always be alert, awake, and ready to act on what God is speaking to us. It may sound strong… but if we are not hearing anything, if all we hear is silence, or if we ignore what we hear, then we are not walking in the Lord’s will. We have placed ourselves outside the sheepfold.

Think of it this way. When our moms called out to us, or call out to us, did or do we hear them? I can tell you from personal experience, when my mom wanted her will done, I could hear her, even down the block. Jimmy, Jimmy… I wanted to bury my head in the dirt, but the call and the request for a response were real. I responded.

That is what the Good Shepherd is saying. We cannot help but hear and if we are within the sheepfold we must then act.

We easily know God’s call to us because His voice is clear, right here in Holy Scripture, in Holy Tradition, in the Holy Spirit guided teaching of the Church. We indeed know God’s will and desire for us.

On top of that, we have the voice of the Holy Spirit we have each received. He leads us to the places He wishes and asks us to carry out the work He needs done: witnessing, serving, evangelizing, and more.

When the Good Shepherd’s voice is stirred in us His words are words of life. Jimmy must get up, get going and do. We all must so we may live in His sheepfold forever.

Moving forward.

When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

This passage taken from John, Chapter 21, verses 1 through 18 is just so beautiful. It encapsulates the gospel of our Lord and Savior in all its richness, all its joy.

The first part of this passage reveals how Jesus calls us, asks us to recognize Him, moves us from where we are to where we must be, and then gives us the great grace to draw many into the Kingdom.

Here we have a group of men just doing their thing. They were fishing, trying to get by. Many were fishermen to begin with, so they were comfortable back in this lifestyle.

But as happens with Jesus, He would not let them just remain there. They had far more important things to do.

The first thing we must do, as the Apostles had to do, is recognize Him. We must see the risen Lord and hear His call to us.

Like the Apostles, Jesus desires to move us forward in our Kingdom work. He does not want to leave us alone by the seashore (or anywhere else) fishing randomly and catching nothing. He rather infuses us with His grace to bring in an abundant catch; to gather people into the Kingdom and feed them with the Bread of Life – just as Jesus fed them by the seashore.

The second part of this passage reminds us that Jesus’ love and forgiveness is so much greater than our faults, failings, unworthiness, and sinfulness.

Peter, on the night Jesus was betrayed, despite all his protestations of being a great and brave follower of Jesus, one who would die with Him, rather took the course of denying Him. ‘I do not know Him.’ he said.

Certainly, the pain of that great sin weighed on Peter. We recall that the gospels tell us that Peter wept bitterly after his betrayal. Similarly, our sins should weigh on us. We should weep, not just for the great sins we commit, but for every little betrayal of our Lord, every way we fail to measure up in living the gospel life and evangelizing.

Like with Peter, our lLike with Peter, our love response to Jesus brings forgiveness, restoration, and a deeper commitment to doing all He calls us to – the tending and feeding of His flock for which we are all responsible as we follow Him.

He’s
hungry!

since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God.

I read a very interesting article recently. It concerned the hungry Jesus. Sounds like the name of a great cooking show!

Jesus spent much time at meals. He did this in three ways.

At most meals, Jesus was the guest. He was invited by many. As an iterant Rabbi He relied on the hospitality and generosity of others. These meals were encounters with the hurt, broken, and lost. They were an opportunity to learn important truths. They were an opportunity wherein Jesus offered healing through His call to faith and conversion – change of life, rejection of sin.

The article points out that Jesus was rarely the host, and when He did host actual meals in time, excepting the feeding of the multitudes, He only fed those who were closest to Him.

The third type of meal Jesus offered was visions of the eschatological meal. This was the meal in the kingdom after the end of time, His return. Again, we return to a limited meal – open only to the prepared, the faithful, the wise who could enter the banquet.

In these three types of meals we see representations of Jesus’ hunger. 

Jesus’ hunger starts with His call to conversion, to invite all into the kingdom meal. He is hungry for each person’s participation in the kingdom life. But there are requirements to get in! Jesus had to teach those – and so He showed us the way. He told us that all are welcome to commit, to change, to become participants.

If we do as He asks, if we truly live as He models, we get to take part in the meal offered here this very Sunday – the Eucharistic banquet. Eucharist means thanksgiving and we should be very thankful for inclusion in this meal with Jesus. We also have the promise of the kingdom meal, full participation in heaven life.

Certainly, scripture shows us that Jesus was most hungry for unity of life with the Father and Spirit and our participation in that reality, that meal where love is perfected. We have gained access. Hungry?Â
