May 2026 Newsletter – Saying Yes

May 12, 2026

That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus.

Christ is Risen! Alleluia!
He is truly risen! Alleluia!

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes.

Throughout human history we have always, using a modern aphorism, had agency. Having agency means that we have the power to say yes and no, to do things or not do things. We have the power of choice, to go down the straight and narrow path or to follow the wide and destructive path.

In 2 Corinthians 1:17-20 St. Paul reflects on choices, our yeses and nos. The problem with humanity is that both our choices and promises tend to vacillate. A reputation for keeping promises can be destroyed easily. Our reliability can be exceptional until it isn’t. It happens in big and small ways. The other night I promised to pick up milk on the way home – and forgot completely. Human promises are often unreliable. Why? Humans are subject to change. They can be “yes” one moment and “no” the next.

What Paul is pointing out is that God does not fail in what He promises. God’s promises are always trustworthy and consistent. What He promises, He fulfills without fail. He is not a God who is fickle and subject to change. He is always yes.

As Christians we are called to measure the depth of our yes and no. God is asking for our yes to His will, and this is not something complex. It is how we live devoutly each day, whether our doors are open or closed. Do we live the Christian ideal of prayer, kindness, charity, devotion, fellowship, grounding in scripture, and worship? This is well measured when we compare our response to God in light of the Blessed Virgin’s response. Remember, she could have said no to God’s plan. She had agency to do so, yet her faith, instilled in her from her earliest life, resulted in a yes, not just for a moment, not just for the birth of a baby, but for her lifetime.

As we spend time contemplating what Jesus has done for us, because  Mary said yes, let us work on offering God our constant yes.

Welcome to our May 2026 Newsletter. The month of May offers us the opportunity to give thanks for everything that occured over the past month and the chance to look forward. There is so much coming up that we can say yes to.

Included in the Newsletter is our entire schedule of events for late May and early summer. We give thanks for our moms and all the special women in our lives with specific focus on our Blessed Mother. The days of the Easter Season are passing quickly and we will arrive at Pentecost ready to take up Jesus’ plan for the Kingdom we are charged with building. There’s lots of new stuff – come check it out. Some other new features to take note of – a listing of Mass Intentions, and our VMFC Corner.
